Every winter
the city of Harbin, located in the far
reaches of northern
China,
hosts a Snow & Ice Sculpture Festival.
International
teams from around
the world compete in a snow carving
competition. Teams start with a
3 metre cube of snow and turn it
into a piece of frozen art.
At night, the Ice Festival comes to life. A
Disney-like city of
ice has been
built with structures up to 30 metres tall.
Huge
blocks are cut from the
nearby Songhua River. Although the
temperature frequently
drops to -40 F/C, a million tourists attend from
around the world.
